Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We seek passionate individuals with demonstrated potential to establish a strong externally funded research program in biomedical engineering and contribute to the teaching mission of the department. Specific areas of interest for the department are systems biology, biomedical imaging, modeling & biocomputation, and health care analytics. However, outstanding applications in other areas will also be considered. Candidates must have a Ph.D., or foreign degree equivalent, in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline. All degree requirements must be complete at the time of appointment. Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must exhibit, through their accomplishments, promise of future distinction in research, scholarship and education. Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must possess a record of excellence in scholarship as demonstrated by an emerging national and/or international reputation, a high quality level of educational activities including teaching and advising, and a significant level of service to the department, the Institute, and the profession.
The BME department is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the country. The department has 13 faculty members, 420 undergraduate and 55 graduate students. Research expenditures reached $5.2M last year, and the department is home to six NSF Career award winners, ten NIH R01 grants, a NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, and a multi-PI NIH U01 grant. Current research areas in the department are biomolecular science and engineering, biomedical imaging, musculoskeletal engineering, neural engineering, systems biology & biocomputation, and vascular engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Biomedical Engineering curriculum, develop and maintain a robust program of externally sponsored research, and participate in service activities of the BME Department, the School of Engineering, and Rensselaer.
Rensselaer offers world-class research facilities and an atmosphere promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. The 218,000 square foot Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) contains staff-supported core facilities. The Center for Computational Innovation provides the fastest supercomputer found at a private university and the only Watson computer found at a university. The Biomedical Engineering Department has long-standing collaborative relationships with Albany, Boston, New York, New Haven, and Rochester area hospitals and medical centers, as well as with the GE Global Research Center located in the NY capital region.
