Deepak Vashishth Named the Yamada Corporation Professor

Biomedical Engineering professor and CBIS director Dr. Deepak Vashishth has been named the Yamada Corporation Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The endowed professorship recognizes an exceptional faculty member who is committed to excellence in engineering education and who inspires others to achieve their personal best. The prestigious Yamada Corporation Professorship is one of the highest honors bestowed on a Rensselaer faculty member. 

About the Yamada Corporation
The Yamada Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, is a leading worldwide producer of industrial equipment in the areas of space, aircraft, defense, information technology, and biotechnology.

The Yamada-Rensselaer relationship dates back to the late 1980s when Masashi Yamada, president and CEO of the Yamada Corporation, made a $1 million donation to Rensselaer to support education. The fund, which has grown over the years, is split into the Masashi Yamada Fellowship geared toward Japanese graduate students and the endowed Yamada Corporation Professorship.


About Deepak Vashishth: Deepak is nationally and internationally recognized for his work in the area of bone and tissue engineering. Deepak is currently the Director of Shirley Ann Jackson, PhD, Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies and a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His fundamental and translational research, based in biomedical engineering, is establishing a new Bone-Brain-Gut Axis, developing new strategies to functionalize bone matrix and to produce tissue engineering scaffolds through biomimicry; and redefining how changes in bone health associated with osteoporosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer are diagnosed, managed and treated. He is recipient of the Class of 1951 Outstanding Teaching Award, the Outstanding Professor Inter-Fraternity Council Award, and the William H. Wiley 1866 Distinguished Faculty Award (2022) at Rensselaer.
