Regenerative and Biocomputational Engineering
An REU program, currently under review for funding by the National Science Foundation, offers undergraduate students from other universities the opportunity to participate in ongoing research with faculty members during a 10-week period in the summer. For those students considering a career in research, an undergraduate research experience is a great place to start. The program provides students the opportunity to work side by side with RPI faculty and graduate students to investigate a broad range of important and interesting problems at the forefront of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Not only do students gain valuable hands-on experience, they also have the opportunity to see first hand some of the world-class research under way at RPI and find out how discoveries made here benefit society. During the summer research experience, participants make short progress presentations to their peers during program meetings, attend presentation skills workshops, make a formal poster presentation of their research experience at the end of the program, and submit a written final report describing the results of their research. Many students go on to present their results at national and international conferences and publish them in scientific journals. View Program Brochure
Participant Support
Each participant receives a stipend of $6,000 for participation in the program. Other benefits include on-campus housing (provided by the REU), partial meal and travel allowances; participation in campus-wide REU activities; and full access to university recreational facilities.
Eligibility
To participate in the program, students must:
- Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- Have a desire to participate in research
- Be majoring in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or a related discipline (e.g. biology, chemistry, math, physics or another field of engineering)
- Have a 3.3 GPA or greater and have rising junior or senior status with at least 60 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) completed toward their degree
- Provide application and all required supporting documentation by specified deadlines
