Materials and Systems Biology Research in Biotechnology and Biomedicine
An REU program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, offers undergraduate students from other universities the opportunity to participate in ongoing research with faculty members during a 10-week period in the summer. For those students considering a career in research, an undergraduate research experience is a great place to start. The program provides students the opportunity to work side by side with RPI faculty and graduate students to investigate a broad range of important and interesting problems at the forefront of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Not only do students gain valuable hands-on experience, they also have the opportunity to see first hand some of the world-class research under way at RPI and find out how discoveries made here benefit society.
During the summer research experience, participants make short progress presentations to their peers during program meetings, attend presentation skills workshops, make a formal poster presentation of their research experience at the end of the program, and submit a written final report describing the results of their research.Students may not enroll in additional courses for the summer sessions. Many students go on to present their results at national and international conferences and publish them in scientific journals.
A brochure about the program can be found here: http://bme.rpi.edu/images/stories/REU/reu_brochure_rpi.pdf
Stipend:Each participant receives a stipend of $4,500 for participation in the program. Other benefits include housing and travel allowances; participation in campus-wide REU activities; and full access to university recreational facilities.
Eligibility:To participate in the program, students must:
-Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Have a desire to participate in research
Be majoring in chemical engineering or a related discipline (e.g. biology, chemistry, math, physics or another field of engineering)
Have a 3.3 GPA or greater and have rising junior or senior status with at least 60 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) completed toward their degree
Provide application and all required supporting documentation by specified deadlines
Program Dates and Application Process:The program will be held on campus at RPI during the summer of 2012. To apply, please print the instructions and application form, fill out the form, and mail it in before the deadline.
