Biomedical engineering is a relatively new engineering discipline which focuses on the application of engineering principles to human physiology. The American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has put together an excellent overview of the biomedical engineering profession. More information about the undergraduate BME degree program at RPI can be found below.

Bachelor Program
Biomedical Engineering B.S., B.S. with Minor in Management, B.S. with Minor in Data Science, B.S. Premed Option
Specializations: Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Biomedical Data Science, Bioimaging, and Medical Devices
Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer is one of the oldest BME departments in the nation. For over 40 years, we have produced outstanding academics, industry leaders and research scientists. The department has undergone a rapid expansion over the last few years and plays a leading role in educating the biomedical engineering workforce of the future.
Students pursuing a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering have the option to specialize in one of five areas: Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Biomedical Data Science, Bioimaging, or Medical Devices.
Details can be found in the Undergraduate Handbook or the Course Catalog.
B.S. with Minor in Management
The Lally School offers undergraduate minor programs for Rensselaer students majoring in biomedical engineering.
B.S. with Data Science Minor
The biomedical engineering B.S. program can be combined with a minor in Data Science offered by the Industrial and Systems Engineering department.
B.S. Premed Option
The biomedical engineering B.S. program allows students to meet the requirements for medical school by taking appropriate classes as electives. More details can be found in the Undergraduate Handbook.
Accelerated and Interdisciplinary Degree Programs
Biomedical Engineering and Medicine
The Biomedical Engineering Department, in conjunction with Albany Medical College, also offers the Physician Engineer (PE) program in which students are able to earn a B.S. in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer and an M.D. from Albany Medical College.
Co-Terminal Graduate Degree Program
The Co-terminal Graduate degree program offers Rensselaer undergraduates with strong academic records the opportunity to study for a master’s degree while completing their bachelor’s degree.
