Xavier Intes elected SPIE Fellow
Dr. Xavier Intes has been elected as a Fellow of SPIE. Dr. Intes is one of 88 new Fellows elected in 2019, which is a very distinguished class including three Nobel Prize winners. Fellows are Members of the Society who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging.
Multiple Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty Positions in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Rensselaer – IBM Research Partnership
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, NY is embarking on an ambitious expansion in Computational Sciences and Engineering research and education, with a focus on creating a research cluster in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). We seek applications from outstanding candidates at all ranks (assistant, associate, and full professor) who will build upon our existing strengths in these and related areas across the Schools of Science, Engineering, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Management, and Architecture.
The annual graduate symposium was held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. The graduate students presented their research as either podium or poster presentation to their peers, the faculty, and a group of judges. The presentations were of very high quality reflecting the research performed by the students.
Several awards were presented to the students at the end of the symposium.
Five faculty members of the Biomedical Engineering Department were honored at the 2018 Trustee Celebration.
Specifically, the honored faculty were:
- Ryan Gilbert (promoted to Professor; appointed co-Editor in Chief of the journal Cells, Tissues, Organs)
- Juergen Hahn (appointed Section Editor in Chief of the journal Processes)
- Mariah Hahn (received School of Engineering 2018 Research Excellence Award)
- Xavier Intes (named a NIH chartered member)
- Ge Wang (received School of Engineering 2018 Outstanding Professor Award)

Jennifer Rico-Varela receives conference presentation award
Jennifer Rico-Varela, a graduate student in Dr. Leo Wan's lab, has been honored with a presentation award at the 2018 National Diversity in STEM Conference which was held in San Antonio, Texas. Her award was the only one given to a graduate student in biomedical engineering.
About the award: The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science awarded 105 graduate and undergraduate students for their research and presentation skills.
Alexies Ziemba has been selected to receive a 2018 Trainee Professional Development Award from the Society for Neuroscience. This award is tied to the Neuroscience 2018 meeting which will be held from November 3-7 in San Diego, California, where Alexis will present her work and participate in professional development seminars.
The Society for Neuroscience is a professional society, headquartered in Washington, DC, for basic scientists and physicians around the world whose research is focused on the study of the brain and nervous system.
Paper by Intes group and collaborators is cover story for the Journal of Controlled Release
The paper "Quantitative imaging of receptor-ligand engagement in intact live animals" was chosen as the cover story for Issue 286 of the Journal of Controlled Release. The paper is a collaboration between Rensselaer and Albany Medical College and is authored by Alena Rudkouskaya, Nattawut Sinsuebphon, Jamie Ward, Kate Tubbesing, Xavier Intes, and Margarida Barroso.
Alexis Ziemba, a graduate student in Dr. Ryan Gilbert's group, has received one of the 2018 BMES Career Development Awards. The award provides a complementary registration for the 2018 BMES Annual Meeting and a travel allowance.
