We are proud to be named as host of the 2011 Northeast Bioengineering Conference. Watch this website for information coming soon about dates, speakers, special events and other conference materials. For information on previous Northeast Bioengineering Conferences please see the NEBEC website. More Information: http://www.nebec.org/
At its recent Annual Conference, the Society for Women Engineers (SWE) awarded Rensselaer students and RPI-SWE Society for their contributions to Science (Andrea Nordberg received 2nd place for the Undergraduate Collegiate Technical Poster Competition) and promotion of engineering amongst women (the MOU Partnership Award for Exploring Engineering Day, certificate for Oustanding Collegiate Section, and Membership Retention Award). Pictured at right are Andrea Nordberg and SWE President Siddika Demir.
We are pleased to be among the distinguished group of 2010 PUF Laureates (Vashishth Co-PI). This 3-year award will allow graduate student exchange and combined PhD degrees between the Biomedical Engineering Department at Rensselaer and Université Montpellier 2, France. Congratulations to Deanna Thompson, who has been awarded the 2010 Research Excellence Award from the School of Engineering.
It is a great pleasure to share the news that David Corr has received an NSF Career Award for project, entitled "CAREER: Engineering Functional Muscle - Tendon Structures using Scaffold - Free Cell - Based Directed Assembly and Theoretical Modeling."
Jin Chen, doctoral student of Dr. Xavier Intes, received the "Outstanding Presentation of Original Scientific Research" from Columbia University, for her presentation titled "Time gated optical imaging for functional and structural imaging" at the 36th Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference in March 2010. Jin also received the "Best Student Poster Presentation Award" from the 2010 Biomedical Optics Meeting in Miami, FL. The title was "Time Resolved Optical Imaging with Patterned Light for Pre - Clinical Studies."
Johannes Kutten, class of 2010, has won a SURF (summer undergraduate research fellowship) through NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) in Gaithersburg, MD. Johannes will be working in the Complex Fluids group, part of the Materials Science and Engineering Lab (MSEL). The project he is involved with examines microfluidic devices which could be used to carry out chemical reactions at a very small scale. To accomplish this, reagents would have to be mixed in very precise amounts.
Bhavana Mohanraj, a senior in Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded the Class of 1902 Research Prize. This prize, established by the Class of 1902, is awarded at Commencement to the senior in the School of Science or Engineering who has completed at least two semesters of undergraduate research and who presents the best research results culminating in a written report, submitted paper, or thesis. Bhavana's research is with Profs. Chrisey and Corr, and involves using electric-cell impedance sensing (ECIS) to determine the toxicity of various substances.
