Dr. Juergen Hahn, Director of the Jackson Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed as the sixth Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Process Control, effective January 1, 2027. Dr. Hahn has served on the journal’s editorial board since 2010 and as its Deputy Editor-in-Chief since 2020.

Assistant Professor Elizabeth Blaber has been awarded the RPI Luce Professorship! 

NIH has awarded the Center for Biotechnology & Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) at RPI a five-year grant for training doctoral students in biomolecular science and engineering. The “Biomolecular Science and Engineering Training Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute” is a $2.1M award dedicated to the education of a broad pool of doctoral students spanning the life sciences and engineering to address the nation’s biomedical research agenda.

Frank Peters, a current PhD student in Dr. Leo Wan's lab, was selected for the 2026 Regeneron Prize for Creative Innovation in the graduate category. Frank was awarded $25,000 for his dream project proposal, involving the use of "lithographic optogenetics to spatially specify cell types during 3D-printing of vascular organoids, enabling the three-dimensional study of fully intact in vitro vascular networks".

Professor Ge Wang has received industrial support from Applied Materials to advance the development of foundation models for computed tomography reconstruction of semiconductors. This project builds on Professor Wang’s long-standing expertise in CT, inverse problems, and AI-driven foundation models for imaging, while leveraging RPI’s innovative portfolio. The collaboration reflects the growing convergence of artificial intelligence, advanced imaging, and semiconductor manufacturing.

Xavier Intes (RPI) and Margarida Barroso (Albany Medical Center) have been selected for a new National Cancer Institute (NCI) R01 grant! This is a 5-year grant with a $3.9 million budget and focuses on the "Role of tumor biomechanics on drug-receptor engagement". Xavier and Margarida have collaborated on several large NIH grants previously and it further strengthens the CeMSIM-CTI collaboration in translational imaging.

BME graduating senior, Nadine Grant, has been selected for the Class of 1902 Research Prize. Established in 1927, the Class of 1902 Research Prize is awarded to a graduating senior in the RPI School of Science or Engineering who has completed at least two semesters of undergraduate research and who presents the best research results, culminating in a written report, submitted paper, or thesis.

Pingkun Yan, PhD. Professor and Department Head of Biomedical Engineering was inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) 2026 College of Fellows on April 13, 2026 . This is among the highest professional distinctions in medical and biological engineering, making up the top two percent of engineers in this field.
